The increased deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs) and automated or remotely operated grid management technologies has provided additional complexities and challenges for utilities as they transition from a monodirectional model of simply providing electricity to a complex, digital, data intensive, prosumer driven, decentralized energy solutions provider.
Technological advancements (e.
g.
smart inverters, grid edge computing, advanced grid controls) and emerging business models (community microgrids, transactive rate-based prosumer models, nodal pricing, etc.
.
) are changing the industry.
Hatch’s Distributed Energy Solutions team supports utilities with techno-economic modelling of distributed energy resources, microgrid system design & equipment specification, protection & controls, renewable resources & distributed generation integration, power conversion system (inverter) grid support, new technology evaluation, and DER use case optimization.
Technologies the Distributed Energy Solutions team supports and integrates include microgrid controllers, solar, wind, batteries, electrolysers, fuel cells, and various power conversion systems (inverters).
We work alongside our clients to modernize their grids to meet the challenges of today and the future.
Hatch is looking for Senior and Intermediate level engineers with project management and project engineering experience with a desire to create utility systems of the future, today.
Project Delivery Responsibilities may include: Contributing and/or leading distributed energy solutions projects such as those described above Solve challenging problems pertaining to integrating distributed resources to off-grid and on-grid systems including studies, equipment specification definition, system design, protection settings, full system design, and engineering support during construction, commissioning, and operation Mentor and guide junior resources within the team, providing technical mentorship and direction Work alongside and support delivery of projects from other Hatch service offerings including those from Hatch’s transmission & integration, power system studies, renewables, digital, advisory, technology, and/or infrastructure and mining businesses Business Development Responsibilities may include: Identifying and pursuing clients planning to deploy DERs within their grids across the US & the Caribbean Leading or participation in Bid / NoBid discussions for potential opportunities Leading or supporting the creation of proposal documents, including scope, schedule, and level of effort estimates Working with the marketing team to establish / update marketing & client facing materials, as applicable Senior resources would be expected to lead business development initiatives taking on account management responsibilities expanding the team’s project pipeline Senior and Intermediate resources would be expected to contribute to marketing campaigns, attend and speak at industry conferences, and present to clients to advance leads and secure opportunities.
Develop thought leadership materials for publication in industry publications, at conferences, or generally on applicable social media platforms Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in engineering with an applicable discipline (eg.
Electrical, Power systems, etc.
) Professional Engineer designation Previous experience in wind energy, solar energy, energy storage, diesel generators, microgrid control systems, and power conversion systems 5-10 years of professional experience for Intermediate resources with 4+ years of directly related experience 11-15+ years of experience for Senior resources with 6+ years of directly related experience including project or team leadership roles Understanding of SCADA systems and integration of intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) into SCADA systems Familiarity with communication protocols such as ModBus, DNP3, 2030.

Experience with distribution system protection & controls related to the integration of DERs Understand the challenges utilities are facing with increasing DER penetration and can describe alternate business models that utilities are considering, piloting, or have recently deployed Knowledge of cybersecurity standards and protocols Software Tools familiarity with the following, or comparable: Resource modeling such as PVsyst, WAsP, Vortex System Modeling such as CYME, Homer, and PSCAD Occasional domestic and international travel throughout North America for client, conference, and site visits is required.
This position reports to the Senior Director, Smart Grid.
